I like my new telephone, my computer works just fine, my calculator is perfect, but Lord, I miss my mind! ~Unkown
Two colleagues bought Iphones last week. Good for them, but at the same time productivity dropped with 80 percent. Coincidence? I don’t know. But every time I pass their office, at lunch breaks or at a short coffee break I see their new love in their hands.
It raises the question are smartphones that smart for companies? If you have traveling personnel, like the sales department or people in leading positions constantly going to meetings no doubt it is good. But office staff whose work tool is a computer, what do they need a smart phone for?
If I need to check something on internet I use the computer and even if I feel the urge to do something not work related like check my personal mail I log in to my webmail server using the computer. Only leaves the smart phone as a toy, download funny apps to play around with.
This is not a crusade against Iphone or other smart phones. I am a tech geek and I have my android device but between sitting by a computer all day and at home I usually have a laptop running I really don’t see the need to be connected on my way to and from work. If someone wants to reach me in a hurry they can call me, and you don’t need a smart phone to receive calls.
Would be interesting to see some research of work productivity before and after Iphone.
